FATdrop offers a way to deal with pre-release music filesharing
Brighton-based promo company FATdrop is offering a novel solution. Driven by first-hand experience of the frustrations faced by labels, the company is committed to helping them survive in an ever-changing music industry. FATdrop’s latest solution is JOVA, a new MP3 watermarking system.
FATdrop’s promo service and JOVA deliver peace-of-mind in a user-friendly package: as recipients download a FATdrop promo, each mp3 is tagged with a unique JOVA watermark. If a client then finds their tracks being shared illegally, they can download a suspect mp3 and send it to FATdrop for analysis. If a JOVA watermark is detected, FATdrop will be able to identify the original recipient. The client can then decide whether they need to take any action, e.g. removing that person from their mailing lists.
Unlike DRM, JOVA is unrestrictive, and crucially, unlike other technologies to protect pre-release music, it does not affect sound quality. Labels including Renaissance, Global Underground and Sunday Best, and music PR companies such as Get Involved, Hyperactive and Darling Department are among the first FATdrop clients to champion the new service.
